Swedish road safety
a meetingplace for increased road safety |

A description of how the driver education system can be improved, how the traffic's negative influence on environment can be reduced and how lives can be saved.
I think you agree this it is not acceptable that any human being should be killed or injured due to fellow road-users’ lack of consideration or lack of willingness to follow traffic regulations or due to questionable decisions from our decision-makers.
In addition one has to make demands and actively work that all drivers getting both a theoretical and practical driving instruction which enables them to handle the risk situations that can arise in the more and more complex traffic.

This should lead to improved road safety. To claim that no in-depth theoretical knowledge is needed to get a driving licence for the drivers cannot be justified.
Insufficient theoretic knowledge, for example not understanding the meaning of the answer to a theoretical question, will in many cases lead to catastrophes for the people involved.
Discussions that make young people more conscious of their responsibility to the world around them need to be held continuously and need to direct the traffic safety work from the “cradle to the grave”.
A traffic culture can thus be created and be passed on to the next generation in a continuous life-long education process based on mutual respect, personal responsibility and judgement. |

Background |
I have worked with driving tuition and road safety since 1978. |
|
|
My objective has always been to push for continuous improvement. After all the fact is that no matter how much we improve the permanent traffic environment there will still be accidents if we do not have an awareness of the existing risks. Therefore my main objective has been to provide driving tuition of high quality and to get an understanding for the importance of a high risk awareness. |

Fixed price |
A perpetually recurring question during the first contact with my customers has been: |
|
|
|
”How many driving lessons do I need to take? |
|
|
This gave rise to the project "fixed price" in 1987. The idea was that the potential customers of the school should know exactly how much they would pay for their driving instruction leading up to a driver's licence.
To be able to perform effective training both economically and educationally it is essential that the training programme set up by the school is followed. Thus the set goals can be achieved within a reasonable time frame.
To avoid any misunderstandings between the school and the customer a written agreement must be signed. |

Driving range learning |
Already during my time as a trainee I got interested in driving instruction in groups, so called driving range learning. |
|
|
The basic steps in driving can thus be trained in a fenced in area - a driving range approved by the Traffic Safety Authority (today the Swedish Road Administration). In such a range the learner drivers can practice on their own according to given instructions.
Learner drivers who train the basic manoeuvre in such a way need considerably fewer lessons out in the traffic as they already have learnt to handle the vehicle and are able to concentrate on solving the risk situation that they are faced with in the traffic.
This type of training is still practiced but unfortunately mostly where motorcycle instruction and driving instruction for heavy vehicles is concerned. Driving instruction for passenger cars on a driving range, nowadays only exists in a few places in Sweden. |

Dual control for a motorcycle |
In 1984 we had a Yamaha XZ550 motorcycle fitted with an integrated braking system with dual control, an extra clutch as well as an emergency stop. |
|
|
|
Educationally this was a great success. By sitting on the same motorcycle it was easier to assess the learner drivers ability to handle the motorcycle, his/her advance perception as well as his/her risk awareness.
I august 1984 "Expressen" a Swedish daily newspaper wrote: The driving school "Framtiden" in Vällingby has taken a good initiative. Their tuition on heavy motorcycle takes with instructor behind the driver´s back.
The instructor Ernst Domcelius has together with Björn Anderberg design an 550 cc cardandriven Yamaha with dual control. The instructor has a brakepadel within the rear footrest affecting both front- and rearbrake with a short delay on the frontbrake. On the left hand is a handle and an extra clutch with the emergency stop.
A big step towards better motorcycle training whish we hope will spread to other traffic schools.

At the beginning of spring each year I reunite with former pupils who have taken their motorcycle a driving license at our school. We make a motorcycle tour of about 20 Swedish miles, and during coffee stops we talk about what has happened since we last met. Some also take their friends with them. |

You are also welcome to come along on the tour. Phone me on 070 - 600 52 12 for further information or send me an E-mail at
